GENERAL INFORMATION-

Drivers License:

Getting a license in Alaska coming in from another state:
This is what you'll need to bring in:

1.  A valid license from your previous state.
2.  A certified copy of your birth certificate OR a valid U.S. or Canadian Passport.
3.  Proof of name change if your name is different from your birth certificate (i.e. a
     marrage license or court documents).
4.  $20 cash or check.

You will need to take the written test and pass it prior to being issued your new Alaska driver's license.

Scheduling Road Tests:

Road tests must be scheduled ahead of time with a prepaid $15 fee (check or cash) at the time you schedule.  If you fail to show up for your road test you forfeit the $15.  If you have a problem with the scheduled time, you can call prior to that date to reschedule.  You can schedule at the Craig Police Department Monday through Friday between 8:00am - 4:00pm.

Provisional Licenses:

Teenage drivers with provisional licenses can apply for a license removing the restriction after completing a six-month probationary period without any violations.  If you are under 18, you MUST bring a parent to sign.  There is a $15 fee for a duplicate license.  You must ask to remove the "provisional" restrictions from the license…it does not automatically change.

VEHICLE TRANSACTIONS -

Due to the fact that every vehicle transaction is different depending on the state, releasing signatures, etc. - you need to bring in your documentation and completed forms to be examined by the DMV agent.  General rule of thumb is "You need a title to get a title".  Bring in your current title with you, complete the Vehicle Registration form, and provide payment.  These are very general rules.  You can get detailed information by visiting the DMV website.

FEES -

Fees may vary - the following is a general list for non-commercial vehicles:

$100 Two year registration for all non-commercial passenger vehicles.
$60  For a two year registration for motorcycles.
$30  For a two year registration for a non-commercial  trailer.
$15  For your new title
$15  Additional charge if you have a lien holder (if you owe money to a bank or other entity for the vehicle).

For example: If you need to register your boat trailer it would cost you $30 for the registration and $15 for the title for a total of $45.

PERSONALIZED PLATES -

If you want to obtain personalized plates for your vehicle, the easiest way is to go to the State DMV website click on the link for personalized plates.  This way you can tell if the plate you want is available, see exactly what it looks like, and order it in one easy step.

DMV TIPS -

Cash or checks only - we do not accept credit cards.

Checks should be made out to the City of Craig.

Forms and books are available at the DMV, CPD Dispatch, or on line at the State of Alaska DMV site if you want to complete them ahead of time.

REMINDER:  You must complete a form for every type of transaction with the exception of mail-in registrations on vehicles/boats.

Fill your forms in completely prior to coming up to the counter.  If your forms are not filled out, you will be asked to take a seat and complete them before the DMV agent can assist you.
