Carry Conceal Permits

The Alaska State Legislature recently passed new language in the law requiring a Permit to Carry a Concealed Weapon (AS 18.65.700). The new law has many residents in Alaska wondering what this new language means. Here are some basic rules that the citizens of Craig need to comply with:

DO:
  • If contacted by a peace officer, immediately inform him/her that you are in possession of a firearm or deadly weapon.
  • If contacted by a peace officer, allow the officer to secure the deadly weapon during the duration of the contact.
  • Pay attention to posted signs prohibiting concealed firearms on premises of any building or residence that you may visit.
DON'T:
  • Knowingly carry a concealed weapon within the grounds of or the parking lot immediately adjacent to public/private schools, licensed daycare facilities, federal, city, and state buildings, domestic violence shelters, airports, and courthouses.
  • In a bar or restaurant: It is illegal to carry a loaded gun into a place where liquor is sold for consumption on the premises, except in a restaurant if the person carrying the gun has not consumed alcohol.
  • Bring a concealed weapon on your person into the residence of another person without first obtaining the express permission of an adult residing at the residence.
  • You are not authorized to carry concealed weapons when entering the Craig Police Department or City Hall.

"Think First, Shoot Second"

If you follow these four basic rules, you can reduce the chance of serious physical injury to yourself and others.
  • All Guns Are Always Loaded (Treat firearms as if they are loaded at all times, even if they are empty)
  • Never Let The Muzzle Cross Anything You Are Not Willing To Destroy (Never point the gun at anyone or anything your not willing to loose.
  • Keep Your Finger Off The Trigger At All Times Until You Are Ready To Shoot (It takes on the average 2-5 pounds of pressure on the trigger to fire a weapon)
  • Know Your Target And What Is Beyond It (Make sure there is no property or persons behind your target for an extended distance)

Cleaning

Regular cleaning is important in order for your gun to operate correctly and safely. Taking proper care of it will also maintain its value and extend its life. Always make absolutely sure that guns are unloaded before cleaning.

Store guns so they are not accessible.

Many factors must be considered when deciding where and how to store guns. A person's particular situation will be a major part of the consideration. Dozens of gun storage devices, as well as locking devices that attach directly to the gun, are available. However, mechanical locking devices, like the mechanical safeties built into guns, can fail and should not be used as a substitute for safe gun handling and the observance of all gun safety rules.
Alcohol & Firearms

Never use alcohol or over-the-counter, prescription or other drugs before or while shooting. Alcohol, as well as any other substance likely to impair normal mental or physical bodily functions, must not be used before, while handling, or shooting guns.
